Carpet Tile Square Footage Calculator

Carpet squares are often sold by the box, so the useful estimate includes both room area and package coverage. Add each room separately to calculate the combined area, then enter carpet tile size and the coverage stated on its carton.

How to use this carpet tile square footage calculator

Home offices, basements, bedrooms, and commercial spaces covered with modular carpet tile.

  1. Add the finished room, wall, floor, or ceiling dimensions. Split irregular areas into non-overlapping rectangles.
  2. Choose the measurement unit, enter the tile details, and select a waste percentage that suits the layout.
  3. Use the coverage printed on the manufacturer's box, then calculate to see area, tile count, and the whole boxes to order.

Measure before you estimate

Measure each room at its longest and widest finished points. For a recess or alcove, add another rectangle rather than stretching one room's measurements. Keep the measurements of rooms using the same carpet product together; record the actual face size and carton coverage because edge gaps or pattern direction can change usable coverage.

How the calculation works

The area is the sum of each room rectangle. The tile estimate divides area plus waste by one carpet square's face area and rounds up. Boxes are calculated from the total area plus waste divided by carton coverage, then rounded to whole cartons.

Worked example

Example: two rooms

A 10 ft × 12 ft office and a 6 ft × 8 ft closet use 18-inch square carpet tiles.

Working: The rooms total 120 + 48 = 168 sq ft. At 10% extra, plan for 184.8 sq ft. An 18-inch square tile covers 2.25 sq ft, or about 83 tiles; use carton coverage to round the final order to whole boxes.

Common measurement mistakes

  • Forgetting closets or small connected spaces that share the same product.
  • Using nominal square size instead of carton coverage for box rounding.
  • Ignoring directional arrows or pile orientation that affect offcuts.

Choosing a tile waste percentage

Carpet tile's modular format can make replacement and some layouts efficient, but room edges and directional patterns still create offcuts. Use 5–10% for a simple room only if the product guidance supports it; plan more for several small rooms, unusual shapes, or stock for later repairs.

Always check the product's actual coverage and installation instructions before buying. Cuts, breakage, grout joints, package quantities, and future repair stock can change the final quantity.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

How many carpet tiles come in a box?

It depends on the manufacturer's carton. Enter the carton coverage for a reliable box estimate, or use tile face dimensions for a rough piece count.

Should carpet tiles be included in waste?

Yes. Add an allowance for perimeter cuts, directional layouts, damaged pieces, and any replacement squares you want to keep.

Can I add multiple rooms?

Yes. Add each room as its own rectangle and combine only rooms that use the same carpet tile and package coverage.
